5. Teachers create and maintain safe and challenging learning environments.
Be aware of and can use a range of strategies to establish a positive and inclusive learning environments where all students can learn and are challenged.
In this standard it is of the utmost importance that teachers create an environment that is protective both physically and mentally. By creating a stimulating and interesting classroom environment, students interests are piqued creating participation to be increased. Setting out classroom rules, safety standards as well as outlining consequences can also lead to an enjoyable and safe environment for students to grow.
It is important that students feel comfortable in the classroom, and that they can share any concerns that they may have. To create this within my classroom I ensured all students were full aware of the consequences of any inappropriate behaviour, and created a list of classroom rules which were written in the back of the notebooks students brought to class. I believe that when adapting a classroom environment or doing a task which involves students moving from their seats, safety is of the highest priority. To prevent any sort of harm during these tasks I ensure that instructions are delivered clearly and every single student understands the consequences of misbehaving. It is important to be strict within the classroom as for it affects students development if they are in an environment that they feel threatened as Winters (2008) points out. In conjunction with Pashler, (2009) who states that "once a teacher loses control of their classroom, it becomes harder to regain".
